What was the outcome of the Battle of Gettysburg?
Answer: Union victory
Why this is a good trivia question for 5th graders: Because this question focuses on a specific battle of the Civil War, namely the outcome of it, it helps remind students of the significance of the Battle of Gettysburg and how it was a key turning point in the Civil War.
What was the Emancipation Proclamation?
Answer: A proclamation announced by President Lincoln that declared all enslaved people are free including in the southern slave states
Why this is a good trivia question for 5th graders: This is a good question for 5th graders because it touches on the important topic of slavery and the impact of the Civil War on African Americans, as well as the southern states, because when President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation after the Union troops' victory at the Battle of Antietam, it became a major turning point in the Civil War and a key moment in the struggle for civil rights in the United States.

Why was Union General Ulysses S. Grant an instrumental figure during the Civil War?
Answer: As the war progressed, General Grant became a well-known Union general who led Union soldiers under his command to numerous battlefield victories, which led to President Lincoln placing him in charge of all Union forces.
Why this is a good trivia question for 8th graders: I like this question for 8th graders because it requires them to have a thorough understanding of the role and contributions of one of the most significant individuals of the Civil War.
Why was Confederate General Robert E. Lee an instrumental figure during the Civil War?
Answer: He was a well-known general known for his astute military strategy, and he was one of the most important southern leaders during the War, leading Confederate forces to numerous early battlefield victories. With General Lee surrender at Appomattox Court House, the US Civil War was essentially over.
Why this is a good trivia question for 8th graders: Similar to the prior question, this one requires students to have a deeper understanding of one of the most instrumental leaders and key figures of the Civil War.
Why was the presidential election of 1864 historic?
Answer: The election was historic for several reasons: First, it was the only presidential election to occur during the Civil War; second, the election was between President Lincoln and former Union general George B. McClellan whom Lincoln had fired; third, it resulted in the election of Lincoln to a second consecutive term as president
Why this is a good trivia question for 8th graders: This question is a good one for 8th graders because it requires them to think about historical context. In particular, the long-term impact of the election of 1864 and how it played a role in the outcome of the Civil War, but also two key figures of the war (Lincoln and McClellan)
How did ironclad warships play a major role during the Civil War?
Answer: Ironclads played a major role in the outcome of the Civil War as these new types of naval ships transformed naval warfare
Why this is a good trivia question for 8th graders: With this question, students need to consider the role of ironclads, and advances in technology alike, in the Civil War and how it shaped the course of the conflict. Understanding the ways in which technology influenced the outcome of the war can help students to see how innovation and progress can have a profound impact on historical events.
Why did the first battle of the Civil War occur at Fort Sumter in South Carolina?
Answer: It was a Union-held fort in South Carolina (the first state to secede) and was being re-supplied by Union ships when Confederate President Jefferson Davis ordered Confederate soldiers to open fire onto the fort
Why this is a good trivia question for 8th graders: I like this question because it really challenges 8th graders to think about the sequencing of events that culminated in the outbreak of the Civil War as well as some of the factors that led to the first shots of the Civil War being fired at Fort Sumter.
